Windsor and Goudy Champions
The Wayne Warriors Wrestling Team finished 4th at Eatons Invitational Tournament
Wayne continued their swagger by amassing 141 points, and placing 4th out of 21 teams in the Eaton Invit. This is the highest finish ever for the Warriors of Wayne at the Eaton tourney. When the "Parade of champions" made their way into the gym, there were 7 Wayne finalist. Cheers of "Yeah Wayne were echoing through the Eaton Eagles gymnasium. Marcus Windsor (112), and Tyler Goudy (160) were wrestling for 1st place. Brendan Gibson (103), Daniel McCaslin (119), and Jarrod Hardrick wrestling for 3rd. While Michael Ross (145), and Ronnie Caudill (171) are in the 5th place matches. The baby faced Brendan Gibson took the mat first against Caleb Baum of Urbana. It was a nail bitter, but Baum held on to defeat Brendan 2-1. Gibson, the 103 pound freshman is wrestling very well for Wayne. He has won over 20 matches and at least half were by pin. Next Marcus "The Piranha" Windsor stepped up for the first of two championship matches for Wayne. Windsor was wrestling Eatons own Payton Ott. Windsor literally broke him. At one point Ott had Windsors leg and was about to score a take down. Windsor then performed a move called the Kamikaze. He flipped the man holding his leg from the standing position, and once completed, Ott was now laying on his back and Windsor in control! You had to see it to believe it. After suffering take down after take down, Ott could do nothing but slam his fist into the mat in frustration. Windsor went on to a major decision, beating him 16-4, and capturing the first of 2 Championship titles for Wayne. After the match I asked Marcus where he got that fancy move at? He told me "The Olympian Medalist Nate Carr taught it to him about 3 days ago." He said, "Mr Carr used it in the World Championships in the 80's and I thought it would be useful." Was it ever. Daniel "The Eskimo" McCaslin had the 3rd place match against Patrick McKernan of Ross. Although the match went back and forth McCaslin wasn't able to pull it out. However, he would take home 4th place. McCaslin is #2 on the GWOC website at 119 pounds and has made tremendous strides in his wrestling ability. Michael "I'd rather throw you than know you" Ross was unable to wrestle for 5th place @ the 145 pound weight class, due to medical injury in his previous match. He still placed 6th and we are very proud of the way he wrestled throughout the tournament. If not for the 2 injury forfeits there is no doubt he would be wrestling for 3rd place. Tyler Goudy wrestled Jacob Welch of Eastwood for the 160 pound championship. Just like most championship matches, this one was a hands over your eyes peek through your fingers 6 minutes of holding your breath rollercoaster. In the end Goudy was victorious and won the 2nd Championship of the day for the Wayne wrestling team by a score of 3-2. Goudy along with Windsor are the 2 Warriors currently ranked in the State. Next up in the 171 pound weight class was Ronnie "Red Bull" Caudill. He was battling Tyler Davidson of Ross. This was by far the most exhausting match of the day. In a colossal battle at the end, both wrestlers had to be helped up due to fatigue on the battlefield. However it was Davidson of Ross winning a close one 6-5. Ronnie still placed 6th, and continues to make a name for his self as an up and coming GWOC wrestler. Sophomore Jarrod Hardrick took the mat in the 189 pound contest against Alex Reese of Edgewood. The match was totally dominated by Hardrick. He defeated Reese by a score of 8-2 and took 3rd place. It is quite amazing the strength and speed of Hardrick who is only a sophomore. He is one of many bright spots in the future for Wayne wrestling.
Wayne travels to Springboro next for the GWOC Championships. Good Luck Warriors.
