If wrestling prognosticator Brian Brakeman is right, the Miami Valley could have a lot to celebrate after the state wrestling tournament.
Brakeman recently released his 40th annual state forecast. The predictions are the result of hours of research. Last season, he correctly identified 29 of the 42 state champs.
There is little surprise that Graham is picked to win its 11th state Division II title in a row. And there are several area individuals who could bring home the big prize.
Brakeman’s projections include 10 area wrestlers as projected champs. In D-I, the lone projected champ is Centerville 285-pounder Kyle Rose. He finished second last season at 215.
Springboro’s Cody Shivener is projected second at 135, while Kyle Bryant of Piqua is picked third. Beavercreek’s Josh Stevens (125) is ranked third, while teammate Nick Corba (152) is ranked fifth.
Piqua’s Kyle Bryant (152) is ranked third, as is Springboro’s Brandon Walker (171). Marcus Windsor (112) of Wayne and Ryan Jackson (215) of Springboro are projected to finish sixth.
Graham is projected with six state champs, one shy of its record: David Taylor (112), Micah Jordan (119), Nick Brascetta (140), Bo Jordan (145), Isaac Jordan (160) and Huston Evans (189).
Oakwood’s Josh Nelson is picked to win 125, while Graham’s Matt Stephens (152) is picked second and teammates Case Garrison (135) and Kyle Ryan (171) are projected third. Shane Eshelman, from Milton-Union, is projected to finish third at 189, while Oakwood’s Alex Kooser (145) and Bryan Day (215) of Valley
The Miami Valley is slotted to have just two champs in D-III. Dayton Christian’s Jacob Danishek will try to be the school’s first champ at 112, while Ethan Hayes is picked to defend his title at 215 for Dixie. Troy Christian’s Jordan Marshall is picked second at 135.
The Month of Champions kicks off next weekend with the sectional. D-II and D-III
